Our Fun Evening Solving “The Great Wax Heist” at Madame Tussauds Orlando

Madame Tussauds Orlando is a highly interactive, indoor celebrity wax museum located at the ICON Park Complex along International Drive. This year the museum is hosting the The Great Wax Heist, a Halloween event where guests can complete a scavenger hunt with clues hidden throughout the attraction to solve a mystery. The Great Wax Heist is totally free to do and is included with regular admission to the attraction. This will be a spoiler free review that hopefully provides you enough information to be interested, but doesn’t give any clues to prevent you from solving the mystery yourself.

The plot is simple, “A mysterious heist has taken place at Madame Tussauds Orlando. Priceless artistry tools have mysteriously vanished from Madame Tussaud’s archives—and only you can recover them before they’re lost forever.” Grab your smartphone and follow the clues hidden throughout the attraction to solve the mystery. You’ll have to scan QR codes and track down five hidden artifacts placed among the regular exhibit space. Along the way you’ll uncover fascinating stories about Marie Tussaud and her legendary artistry as you explore Madame Tussauds Orlando like never before.

“A mysterious heist has taken place at Madame Tussauds Orlando. Priceless artistry tools have mysteriously vanished from Madame Tussaud’s archives—and only you can recover them before they’re lost forever.”

As you being your regular tour of the attraction you’ll notice special Great Wax Heist banner stands with QR codes and postings along the walls. These will help give you the clues you need to solve the mystery. You’ll first learn about each of the potential suspects with signs posted near the beginning of the museum and then there will be QR codes to scan with more info. Each QR code links to a website that both gives you information about an artifact in the museum while also providing more information on the suspects, potentially allowing you to eliminate someone. I posted one of the early ones below, but skip over it if you want zero spoilers.

The rest of the museum is simply spectacular. Madame Tussauds Orlando is a large facility with over 90 lifelike figures across themed zones, so you’ll be enjoying the museum’s regular exhibits while working through the mystery. The museum is broken into several zones including: History & Leaders, Justice League: A Call For Heroes, Sports, Music Stars, TV Stars, Movie & Film Stars, A-List Party and Wax Hands. The exhibits are highly interactive as you’re actually encouraged to pose with the celebrity figures and get nose to nose with them. Some of them you’ll swear are real that it is almost frightening to be so close. You’ll be able to sit at the desk in the Oval Office, pose with Neil Armstrong on the Moon, sit on seats from old Yankee Stadium and be a guest on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Finally, in wax hands you can have your hands cast in wax similar to one of the museum’s figures (small additional fee).

In addition to taking iconic photos there’s tons of other types of interactivity at the museum. You can play a trivia game by Einstein, film an action sequence with The Rock, have a dance party with Bad Bunny or jump on a bike with E.T. There are also information stands, kiosks and hosts stationed throughout that will tell you more about the process in making the figures if you’re curious how a wax figure is made to look so lifelike. You can even touch some of the raw wax to see just what the figures are made of.

One of our favorite areas was the massive DC Justice League: A Call For Heroes zone. For theme park business nerds there’s a quirk in the “exclusive” Six Flags “themed attractions” DC license that allows Warner Bros. to grant additional licenses for use of the characters in Florida and Las Vegas. This area was theme park quality awesome with larger than life sets, lighting and sound. Madame Tussauds Orlando is owned by Merlin Entertainments, the same people behind LEGOLAND, so you know high quality interactive attractions are in their DNA and it shows at the museum. A Call for Heroes also has its own interactive game separate from the Great Wax Heist you can enjoy where you’ll need to complete several missions requiring physical interaction with the sets along with Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman and more. There are plenty of iconic pictures to be had here too like holding a helicopter with Superman and tons of interactivity as well. Merlin Entertainments did a great job with a comic book heroes license and it makes you wonder what they could do with it at a place like LEGOLAND as they already offer both LEGO DC Comics and LEGO Marvel under the LEGO Super Heroes banner.

My wife and 10 year old son really enjoyed the Great Wax Heist and the museum in general. Taylor Swift was probably the biggest hit with my wife and she has her own room with a light show and music to create a party atmosphere. We visited the museum on a rainy night in early October and Madame Tussauds Orlando is a great option for bad weather days. The normal museum itself is already great, but the Great Wax Heist is a fun thread to combine the whole thing together.

I don’t want to say too much more about the mystery experience as to not spoil anything. At the museum exit, just before the gift shop, there will be a final banner stand where you can vote as to who you think stole the precious artifacts. You’ll then enter your email and the final verdict will be sent to you a few minutes later to see if you solved the mystery.

Madame Tussauds Orlando is in an entertainment district in Orlando called the ICON Park Complex located along International Drive, just minutes away from other local attractions like Universal, SeaWorld and the Convention Center. Madame Tussauds Orlando is actually located in the base of The Orlando Eye by Merlin Entertainments observation wheel. In addition to the wax museum and wheel there are several other attractions including the SEA LIFE Aquarium, the Museum of Illusions, the Spheres Bubble Show and many of other activities for kids and adults. There’s tons of free parking adjacent to the area and a large amount of dining options available nearby, making it easy to spend a full day or evening in the area.
