Family Review of Galacticoaster at LEGOLAND Florida: A Spectacular Experience That’s So Much More Than a Ride

Our family of 3 had a chance to experience Galacticoaster at LEGOLAND Florida and we were wowed, awestruck and captivated by this amazing attraction. Calling Galacticoaster and “ride” or a “roller coaster” really sells it short as this is a multi-part story driven experience. The actual “coaster” portion of Galacticoaster is pretty short, but you’ll be entertained thoroughly over 10 minutes or so as you’re completely immersed in the ride’s story. This ride and its twin at LEGOLAND California represent a $90 million investment by Merlin Entertainment and you’ll immediately see it was money well spent.

There are some mild spoilers ahead, so stop reading now if you want a spoiler-free experience, but most of what is mentioned here is on any media or advertising about the attraction. The ride itself is in the very back of the park near the water park entrance. You’ll have to go up a ramp and/or stairs to get to it, but it’ll totally be worth it. As you approach the building you’ll be directed to put any bags, bottles or loose articles in an adjacent free locker. This is because you’ll enter and exit the coaster at different stations and won’t be able to retrieve articles left behind. The locker is good for an hour (so you can’t just keep your stuff there all day), but this is generally more than enough time to ride as Galacticoaster has great capacity with a continuous loading platform. The wait on a Saturday in June was typically only posted at 5-10 minutes. Outside the entrance there are also a bunch of figures great for pictures as well as areas for small children under 36”to play, potentially while waiting.

As you enter the building you’ll go past some great LEGO space signage and LEGO structures. Much of the queue is indoors in great air conditioning, but there is one small outdoor covered auxiliary section that can be used to queue for the pre-show. This area was never full during our visit, so we didn’t spend much time in it, but it appeared full of “Easter eggs” for longtime LEGO space fans.

The preshow is fun and very entertaining. The ride pre-show houses the largest animatronic minifigure LEGOLAND has ever built named Biff Dipper an animatronic LEGO minifigure standing 3.5 feet tall. Biff features over 45 facial expressions and nine body movements. Biff Dipper is also the chief engineer and will brief riders on their mission to save the LEGO Galaxy from the Asteroid of Probable Destruction! This story is humorous and absolutely 100% LEGO in character.

As you exit the pre-show you’ll go through another well themed small queue to wait to be assigned to a spacecraft and get your bracelet (generally 2 per party). Ships hold four people and there will be a “grouper” to assign you to a number. On a slower day like when we were there I never saw them putting parties that didn’t know each other together. However, the pre-show alluded that they might do this on busy days saying that you might not have met all your crew mates yet. There is also a single rider line that shares the Fastrack entrance, but both of these bypass the pre-show. It’s a great pre-show, but after seeing it a few times in an hour I could see wanting to bypass it once in a while.

Once 10 groups are ready you’ll enter one of two rooms where you’ll get to customize your spacecraft. The room has 10 numbered touch screens and you head to the one matching your number in the queue. This section is a ton of fun as you’ll get to pick the nose, wing, tail and a special feature for your ship. At 5 selections each you have 625 total combinations. You have 20 seconds to make each choice, so everyone is in sync. After making your choices you’ll see your finished spacecraft and be prompted to tap your bracelet against a sensor.

You’ll then enter the coaster loading station. The first thing that will strike you is how kinetic it is. The coaster offers a continuous loading platform where a belt matches the speed of the cars. The cars face towards you meaning loading is fast and easy. There is just a fast, simple and comfortable lap bar and operators are right there to help keep things moving. Once you’re at the end of the belt a gentle launch will take you around the corner and in front of a screen. Here you’ll see a mirror projection of yourself and watch your custom spacecraft be built around you. Of course your actual car isn’t changing, but the effect is pretty convincing. From there your car will turn and it’s time to launch!

There is a brief countdown, a door goes up and then you’re launched into the dark course. It’s a tire launch, so it’s not overly intense, but still very fun at about 40 mph. I’ll leave most of the course a mystery for you, but it makes good use of both screens, practical effects, audio and lighting. These trains are not your average coaster trains though in that they have the ability to be rotated. This isn’t like a spinning wild mouse coaster, but a highly controlled rotation meant to direct your attention to where the designers want. It feels totally natural in riding and really enhances the experience. This iconic spinning action is similar to the effect on Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at Epcot or the upcoming Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift coasters coming to Universal Studios Hollywood and Florida. You can see the scenery and the rotation in the great Coaster Studios POV below (skip to avoid spoilers).

The time “coasting” is about 45 seconds over ~1,500 feet which is pretty short and when it’s done you’ll both want more, but also be completely satisfied. The ride making good use of corners and moving doors so you never really see another train on course with you. You’ll then turn to the side again towards screens full of grateful LEGO characters for your saving the galaxy. You’ll then meet the moving belt to exit the train. Then all that’s left is a trip through the gift shop where you can buy a photo of your experience for $20 or other Galacticoaster merch. You’ll also find signage and merchandise with Galacticoaster across the park including the 2026 refillable drink bottle.

This ride has been described as “Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind Jr.” and I totally get that comparison. The launch, rotating cars and show building provide some similar experiences. Calling it “junior” is not a slight in the least though, in fact it’s meant as a high complement in delivering a similar experience in a family coaster with only a 36” height requirement. This is a great family experience that could be enjoyed by those “4-99” as the old LEGO boxes used to say.

Our group consisted of a thrill seeking dad, a mom who avoids most coasters and a 9-year-old boy who loves rides. Galacticoaster was a hit across the board. It had enough thrills for the thrill seekers while not being too intense for the more motion adverse crowd. Part of this is owed to its short length, but it is also silky smooth with a coarse 100% hidden until you’ve on it. The story elements help a ton too as you’ll find yourself spotting things from the pre-show. Mom especially enjoyed the process of designing our spacecraft together which no doubt helped make the coaster section more tolerable. There’s no intense drops, inversions or other crazy elements, but the darkness and rotating cars could be mildly disorienting for some. This is one of only a handful of coaster we got off of and she immediately wanted to get back in line and go again.

LEGOLAND Florida entrance

This roller coaster should perform well for LEGOLAND Florida and drive attendance for years to come. It perfectly hits their key family demographic and being in Florida it provides a much needed additional indoor attraction (speaking from experience having visited on some rainy afternoons). The coaster part is less than a minute, but this experience is so much more than that. The story, humor and creativity are off the charts for this attraction. This is a not to be missed experience for enthusiasts seeking out the world’s best rides and for any visitor to the LEGOLAND Florida.
