When you think food and Buffalo, New York, one of the first things that comes to mind are buffalo wings. This spicy favorite originated at Anchor Bar in Buffalo and there are now several locations around the city to experience the original recipe. One of those locations happens to be at Six Flags Darien Lake meaning you can have a quintessential Buffalo experience while visiting the theme park!

The buffalo wing is said to have been invented on March 4, 1964 by Anchor Bar co-owner, Teressa Bellissimo. She took chicken wings, a part of the chicken normally just used for stock, and deep fried them. She then covered them with a secret sauce and they were an instant hit.

I experienced the Anchor Bar location at Six Flags Darien Lake and my review is very positive. The location is a prominent outdoor covered seating area near Predator. There are lots of signs pointing to it and you can’t miss it. The menu is pretty simple and all “buffalo” based. You have baskets with fries, traditional wings, boneless wings, a buffalo chicken sandwich, wrap and salad. Sauces include Mild, Medium, Hot, Extreme Heat, Chipotle BBQ and Garlic Honey. A meal will set you back about $20 (pretty standard for a theme park) and your season pass discount and beverage plan will all work just fine.

I had the traditional wings medium with fries and it was a sincerely good meal. Not just “theme park food good”, but anywhere good. The wings were perfectly cooked to be chewy crispy. The sauce was in the perfect amount and was incredibly flavorful and not overpowering. The fries were also perfectly cooked and the meal was served just a couple minutes after ordering. They sell beer as well and I only with I would have gotten one of those to go with them rather than a Coke.

If you’re in Buffalo getting wings is part of the culinary experience. Anchor bar is both the originator and still one of the best places to get them. If you’re at Six Flags Darien Lake and looking for a meal, you won’t do any better than Anchor Bar. It’s great to see a theme park adopt a local restaurant and I’d love to see that in more locations. Now the only thing Darien Lake needs is a “wing” coaster!
