Could a New Patent by Disney that Uses Cameras and AI to Verify Proper Restraint Usage Help Prevent Tragic Accidents Like the One on Goliath at Six Flags Over Georgia?

Disney has a new patent application out called “System and Method for Verifying Proper Usage of Passenger Restraints” where it uses a combination of cameras, sensors and machine learning (AI) to verify restraints on rides are being used properly. The cameras can look for several “keypoints” to assure the rider is secured. For example, a sensor can tell you that a seatbelt is buckled, but a camera can confirm it is on top on the rider’s torso and not underneath it. The cameras could also assure a restraint is completely closed and securing the rider so that there is a second check to the position sensors already used on rides. This could be especially important for riders with unique physical characteristics (large riders, small riders, missing limbs, odd body shapes, etc.) where a sensor would register as good, but perhaps a potential safety issue remains.

A Combination Spinning Flat Ride and Centrifugal Birthing Machine?

Apparatus for facilitating the birth of a child by centrifugal force
Apparatus for facilitating the birth of a child by centrifugal force

Years ago I took a class on patents and was shown some examples of crazy patents to demonstrate that not all inventions have to work or be useful in real life in order to be granted a patent. One of these was US Patent #3,216,423 “Apparatus for facilitating the birth of a child by centrifugal force”. This was brought to mind again as Hashem Al-Ghaili recently released a video of the potential device in action that was mind blowing. To summarize the invention, it’s essentially a spinning table that literally helps pull the baby out with the same centrifugal forces you’d feel on your favorite theme park ride.

Charge Your Electric Car at Six Flags Over Georgia

Car charging station at a theme park

Six Flags Over Georgia has electric car charging available in its parking lot and at least last year it was totally free! The chargers are on the edge of the main parking area in near ideal parking spots right next to Batman The Ride. This location has to be the prettiest view I’ve had from a charging station. The chargers have the standard SAE J1772 plug, so if you have a Tesla you may need an adapter. The chargers also have huge beautiful LED screens that double to show advertisements.
